British Lead British Lead British Lead

British Standard Rolled Lead Sheet provides a lasting protection for all types of roofs.

It is the professional’s choice for flashings, valley gutters, porches and dormers on residential property and can be the focal point for both traditional and contemporary buildings.

At BLM we are proud of our reputation for producing quality Rolled Lead Sheet - all manufactured to BS EN12588, which ensures thickness consistency.

Our manufacturing site at Welwyn Garden City, which started production in 1932, is home to both the oldest working Lead rolling mill in the UK and one of the most advanced. Continued investment in the latest technology means that, like the product itself, tradition sits side by side with the future.

A depot network and in-house transport ensures complete UK coverage.

As well as producing Lead to BS EN 12588, BLM also hold ISO9001 for quality standard, ISO14001 environmental accreditation and BS OHSAS 18001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management.

Some fascinating snippets from our history:

In 1932, the year we started production, Lead LME prices were a very reasonable £9 per tonne – that’s the equivalent of over £1600 per tonne today based on the average earnings index.

During World War 2 we concentrated on making Lead Rod – helping to produce the millions of bullets needed to win the war.

The original rolling mill installed in 1932 is still in operation today.

The cost of that new Lead rolling mill in 1932 was the princely sum of £6578. Today the new automated robotic system we have recently installed cost £2,000,000. Now as then, we’re investing to ensure we stay at the cutting edge of the Lead Sheet industry.

You can still see the Lead Shot tower at the former Sheldon Bush site in Bristol. Although it is not the original shot tower, the building is grade II listed. Lead was dropped from the top of the tower into water to form perfectly circular Lead Shot pellets.

You may wonder why our sister company, HJ Enthoven, have a site in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales? During the war the government considered that the wilds of Derbyshire were a suitable location away from enemy bombers.
