British Lead are remaining open during the current lockdown - View our 'Pandemic Working Manual'

2020 – A year to remember rather than a year to forget!
As we fast approach the end of another year, we thought it worth reviewing what has happened this year and share some of those things that have impacted us at British Lead Mills.

Firstly, before we can talk about us, we must mention the pandemic.

It is fair to say that the whole country had a massive speed bump in the form of Covid-19. No-one should understate the impact this has had on so many families across the country. By mid-December 2020 nearly 65,000 people had lost their lives so far. No review of the year should pass without acknowledging this and the pain and suffering for the family and friends of these people. The impact on what is fast approaching 2 million people who have tested positive through the year should also be acknowledged as well as the hard work and sacrifices made by frontline healthcare and emergency service personnel.

When the country first went into lockdown, the construction industry was classed as essential so we remained open and continued to recycle lead. Our first thought was how to do this safely. Our teams worked hard to produce a safety manual on how to continue operations during the lockdown and to try and reduce the chances of our colleagues being affected by the virus at work. This manual was a dynamic tool that we have constantly reviewed to make sure that we continue to stay as safe as possible whilst in the work environment.

You can view the manual on LinkedIn where we shared it as a way of trying to help others through our experiences. It has meant some changes to how we work and our thanks must go to all of our colleagues, customers and supply chain partners who have maintained their high health and safety standards throughout the year, enabling us to remain open.

We are also incredibly pleased to have got through this year without any Lost Time Incidents which is a fantastic achievement given the number of moving processes within our operation. It is even more impressive given that we have increased our workforce since the lockdown finished and have 9 new colleagues working in the production area. It is always a challenge to maintain health and safety standards at the highest level and this is tested further when you have new starters working in the dynamic environment. It was during this latter period that we achieved our ISO 45001 Certificate for Occupational Health & Safety and we are very proud of that achievement.

We are proud that we have been able to increase our workforce and provide new jobs in what has been a very tough year for many businesses. In total, we have increased our production team by 7, taken on 2 new apprentices, one mechanical and the other electrical and last but not least, a Marketing Executive. In terms of numbers, this represents a 12.5% increase in the size of our workforce.
Away from health and safety, we entered the year having had a £3m investment in an upgrade to our refinery to reduce our emissions. This project was successfully completed in April. The project was a challenge, as we maintained a fully working plant around the refinery area at the same time as construction was happening. The project was a success, and this has helped future-proof this area of our operations in Welwyn Garden City and reduce our emissions. The logistics that go into making a project like this a success are complicated and we are thankful to our project team and our contractor, Lodge Cotterill, for the work that went into this project.

The challenges that the construction industry has faced this year are well documented and there have been lots of challenges that manufacturers have had to deal with to maintain their supply chains. We were no exception and scrap lead, which we rely on to recycle and make our products, became very scarce during the lockdown period. We were fortunate that we saw this as a problem early enough to be able to formulate a back up plan that meant we used refined lead, made from scrap batteries.

It was significantly more expensive and was a cost that we chose not to pass on to our customers.

What it did show was how resourceful and determined we are in making sure that we continue to deliver the highest quality products to our customers in the shortest time period possible.

Finally, we would like to thank two very important groups of people...

Our customers, who have supported us during the year whilst adapting their own businesses to continue operating during and after the lockdown. We appreciate the hard work that this takes, and we promise to continue to support you into next year.

Our colleagues, without whom we would not have been able to maintain our service. The dedication and commitment they have shown has been amazing in a truly testing year. On top of this, they have gone that extra mile to think about others on several occasions, including raising money for charity and donating PPE equipment to the local hospital.

We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a much better 2021!

Stay Safe with Lead
Here, at BLM, we are fully committed to the safety of our customers.

To ensure it is given the importance and priority it demands, we launch our safety awareness campaign, Stay Safe with Lead.

The campaign aims to encourage users of Lead Sheet to take the right precautions to protect themselves and others when working with Lead.

To support our Stay Safe with Lead campaign, we have developed health & safety tips to ensure end customers are fully aware of the recommended safe work practices when working with Lead.

Due to the density of the material, even the smallest Lead rolls are unusually heavy and completely disproportionate to their size. Handling tips are also available to assist when lifting and moving Lead rolls.

By launching this campaign, we hope to re-engage users of Lead Sheet in the importance of the core safety working practices when handling Lead Sheet.

The Hallclip + is a larger version of the standard Hall Clip, for securing Lead flashings into a wider chase. The Hallhook is a permanent hidden device for use when replacing a broken slate.

Russ Taylor, Sales Development Manager at BLM said: “We are pleased to make these additions to our range. The Hallhook is a great product and although not directly related to Leadwork, it will add value and convenience for our customers.”

New Product Launch: BLM Site Wipes
We are pleased to announce a new addition to our product range – Site Wipes, specially formulated cleaning wipes to help reduce Lead particles on hands and surfaces.

Working with Lead can leave microscopic traces of metal on your hands even if wearing gloves. Keeping blood-lead levels under control is one of the most challenging aspects of being a Leadworker, especially when you are usually up on a roof and nowhere near proper hand washing facilities.

To help tackle this problem, we have developed Site Wipes, a unique solution that is specifically designed to help remove lead particles from skin, or any other surface.

BLM Site Wipes can also be used in combination with soap and water to provide a robust “belt and braces” cleaning routine. With the benefit of an added grime remover, they also offer all-round general purpose use, removing grease, lubricants, adhesives and oils to name a few.

We recognise that nothing will beat a good scrub under running water for getting lead particles off your hands, but when that’s not possible BLM Site Wipes have been proven to be the next best thing.

BLM Site Wipes will shortly be available from all BLM stockists. To find the outlet nearest to you either contact us direct or download the BLM Get Lead App -

BLM Get Lead! App
The BLM GetLead! App is designed to offer a one stop solution for any roofer or builder using BLM’s products.

On this project, we have worked with AppGeeks to develop an easy to use app with powerful features providing a convenient reference tool for contractors.

The Get Lead! app offers full product information, installation guides with exclusive video content, weight and roof pitch calculators and a stockist locator, enabling users to search for their nearest British Lead supplier by current location or postcode. Search results are listed by closest proximity, with additional information including contact details, web address and directions and the ability to call or email the branch directly from the app.

The exclusive videos cover some common Leadwork applications including soakers, step flashing, step & cover flashing, apron & linear flashing and hip & ridge flashing. In addition, a range of installation videos of some of the BLM’s key ancillary products are also available on the app.

GetLead! app enables contractors to check the weight of lead and allow them to find the minimum lap required by measuring the roof pitch degree.

The users of the App can also find answers to the most frequently asked questions about lead production, technical aspects of Rolled Lead Sheet such as quality, weight, sizing and correct use, as well as orders and delivery.

Russ Taylor, Sales Development Manager at BLM British Lead, said: “The BLM Get Lead! app is the first of its kind for the Lead industry. We gave the features and content considerable thought to ensure it offers a one stop solution for any roofer or builder using BLM’s products.”

Whether it’s the installation guides and how to videos, stockist locator, calculators or product information, we are confident there is something here for everyone and it will provide a convenient reference tool for the future”, added Russ Taylor.

The app will be available free of charge for both Apple and Android devices. You can download it from either iTunes or Google Play by searching GetLead!

Call for entries: Our Photo Competition is now open
At BLM, we are passionate about where our products are used and what an amazing difference they make to your project.

Whether you’re a leadworker or a roofing contractor, we invite you to participate in our Photo Competition.

The theme of the Photo Competition focuses on unique and striking Lead photography from impressive and inspiring projects. Either installed on traditional or contemporary buildings, Lead Sheet, in its many roofing applications, exudes a beauty which we are looking to find in your images.

We would like to see pictures of unusual and interesting detail from the hidden to the well-known, small to significant volume projects. Similarly, more common application detailing shot from unusual angles or in an unusual setting.

The judging panel consists of BLM employees together with independent judges from the Lead Sheet Association (LSA) – the foremost independent authority on the design, specification and application of Rolled Lead Sheet for the construction industry. The panel will choose one winning entry and two runners-ups.

When choosing the winner and runners ups, the judges will be looking at leadwork’s technical excellence, originality, composition and overall impact that evoke the best interpretation of the Competition’s theme.

The overall winner will have the option to choose from a Virgin Experience Days Gift Card to the value of £250 or LSA Training Gift Voucher worth £250. The winner and the two runners-up will each receive a set of BLM Lead tools and tool bag and a copy of the latest LSA manual.

The winning images will be published on BLM’s website and social media channels.

MEET THE TEAM: Hayley Cotterill - Area Manager
We recently welcomed Hayley Cotterill to the team at BLM as North West Area Manager.

Hayley is looking forward to bringing a fresh approach to supporting builders’ merchants and is highly committed to provide the best service possible to BLM’s clients across the Midlands and North West England.

We caught up with Hayley to find out a bit more about BLM’s newest recruit.
What role were you doing before joining BLM?

I had spent a short period away from the industry but prior to that I was an Account Manager at Schneider Electric for six years looking after key electrical product distributors, dealing with returns, POS, product training, informing customers on new products, discussing new company policies, organising events, attending trade shows/breakfast mornings and inspections of products to make sure contracts are fulfilled.

Why did you decide to join the team at BLM?

It was a case of being in the right place at the right time when the opportunity to join BLM presented itself. BLM is a known reliable quality brand within the industry. Account management is what I was doing before in many ways, which is something I really enjoy.
Meet the Team BLM

What does your role at BLM involve?

I look after BLM’s merchant outlets within the Midlands and North West area, helping with price enquiries, stock profiles and updating on new products. I aim to grow the business within the area of both lead and ancillary products. Keeping up to date with who branches are selling to and meet with any contractors who may be a potential BLM customer is also a major part of my job.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I love meeting people and being out and about, as opposed to sitting in one place. I thrive on helping customers and building relationships.

What do you like to do outside work?

I like walking my dogs, meeting with friends and going out for food, shopping and reading. Going to the gym and fitness is a passion of mine.  I have also started Ballroom and Latin dancing classes.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

I went on X factor.
Tell us more about that…

The 1st auditions are with judges made up from people within the industry and radio, I didn’t get past them. I sang a song called ‘I Wanna Be Down’ by Brandy. I had never been a singer, only worked as a dancer and I think the dancing was best for me to stick to!

Where would you like to travel to?

Kenya, to work with orphaned elephants.

What is the best advice you ever got?

Don’t worry about making a mistake. It is all part of learning.

Q&A with Darran Phillips, Operations Manager on how Milled (Rolled) Lead is manufactured
Having started his career as a Finishing Operator in Production, Darran Phillips has risen through the ranks to become Operations Manager for refining and manufacturing at BLM.

We talk to Darran about his role and responsibilities to learn more about the process of refining Lead and the manufacture of Rolled Lead Sheet.
How did you get into the Lead industry?

I came from a roofing background where we used Lead a lot and I always had an interest in how Milled Lead was manufactured. Now my understanding of how and where the product is fitted is a major help to know what our customer wants and I try my best to ensure we deliver that.

What is a typical working day for you as an Operations Manager?

I always attend a team meeting with all the managers and supervisors in the morning to review yesterday’s performance and discuss our workload for the day and week ahead, and to make sure materials, machines and personnel are in place to give us a steady and efficient workflow. Otherwise, each day really is different but my duties include managing and developing the team, improving and implementing changes in our processes and working on projects concerning future improvements.
         Q&A Milled Lead

Can you give us a general overview of the production process?

The aim of our refinery is to turn scrap Lead into refined Lead that meets the British Standard (BS EN 12588). So, the idea is to create a high standard quality casting. Refinery Operatives will move the castings over to the mill shop where a Mill Operator will roll the Lead. Once the Lead is rolled down to its desired thickness, they will test it for thickness consistency all the way through until it comes off the rollers and wraps up into logs. The Lead logs are then cut to length and width by Finishing Operators to our customers’ requirements.

What is the process of refining the Lead and what is added to the Lead to achieve the right alloy for British Standard?

Scrap Lead is delivered to us by our suppliers and is emptied in to the scrap bay. We transfer the scrap into a hot kettle and burn it down. All the rubbish and impurities from the scrap Lead float to the top and are removed by the Refinery Operatives to leave us with a pot of molten Lead. We then pump this across to our refining kettles where it’s refined to the alloy required for British Standard.

To do that, we have to add chemicals and test for its composition. We test for copper and may need to add tiny amounts to bring the alloy up to spec. Depending on how much tin and antimony we have to take out; we will add further chemicals that draw these impurities out. These are removed and further tests and analysis are carried out in our on-site Laboratory until we get to the right alloy for British Standard Milled Lead.

How do we ensure that we achieve thickness consistency for British Standard Rolled Lead?

We have a gauge on our Rolling Mills which measures the thickness of the Lead sheet when it is being rolled throughout the whole process. We also gauge it by hand as well. We double check and triple check all the time.

What is the most critical factor in producing Milled Lead?

All factors in the process are critical.
How much emphasis goes in to H&S from a production perspective?

H&S is integrated in to all our procedures. It’s our No 1 priority. We give incentives for the team to report safe and unsafe acts through our Near Miss Award. If there is an unsafe act or even a safe act, team members submit details after a safety discussion of what they have seen which we keep record of so we can follow up on any resulting actions. A winner is chosen by a panel of judges (managers) who vote each month and the winner receives a prize, usually an Amazon voucher.

We also motivate people to challenge unsafe acts and also praise them for safe acts. Everyone’s working towards a healthier and safer environment.
What do you like most about your role?

Developing, motivating and engaging the operations team as well as offering flexible solutions for the business.

What part of the job do you find most challenging?

Introducing new effective procedures and processes…. I like to be challenged.

ECOBAT – The Strength Behind BLM’s Market Leading Position
In 2017, BLM will celebrate its 85th birthday. We have seen many significant changes within the industry, with legislation and within the company during that time but none have been greater than our acquisition by ECOBAT Technologies in 1994.
ECOBAT Technologies are the world’s largest producer and recycler of Lead, operating from 29 plants in 8 countries over 4 continents and employing over 3,500 people. The combined group recycles and processes in excess of one million tonnes of lead every year, primarily through recycling spent lead acid batteries.
The company is completely unique from any other global battery recycling business, providing closed loop recycling for lead acid batteries through its various brands. These specialise in the collection, transport, storage and recycling of spent batteries through to the production of lead alloys and the distribution of new lead acid batteries.
In addition, key by-products are supplied to a range of industries, produced as a result of its recycling processes in the form of high quality polypropylene, gypsum, sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and other precious metals including gold and silver. Almost nothing goes to waste.
The Group utilises best available technology at all its sites worldwide, which share information and best practise to ensure all brands develop standards of quality, efficiency and productivity in tandem. This ensures that the critical environmental and health & safety management elements of our operations remain consistently high and always ahead of all applicable legal requirements.
Having the strength of ECOBAT at its core has without doubt got us to where we are now; at the forefront of British Standard Rolled Lead Sheet production and the UK’s largest recycler of soft scrap lead. While we are largely self-sufficient in terms of our raw material sources, customers can rest assured that being part of ECOBAT guarantees continued supply from a globally recognised group, where advances in technology and innovation are at the forefront of everything it does.
So when it comes to recycling Lead, no other business has more experience or expertise than ECOBAT.
